This design is very similar to overhung (End suction) pumps in which the suction takes place in axial direction and the discharge takes in the radial direction into the scroll
casing. Seals of different designs can be used at the back of impeller to prevent leakage to atmosphere. The bearings are mostly sleeve / tilting pad suitably designed to take care of radial and axial loads.
