COMPRESSOR TRAINS:

COMPRESSOR TRAINS:

Large pressure ratios cannot be handled by one single casing alone. Similarly it is not possible to split the compression cycle into more than two or three stages within one casing. The major compressor manufacturers therefore build compressor trains that may consist of up to four separate casings. These separate compressors, which need not be of same type, are interconnected by couplings; they can be powered by a common driver. When additional timing gearing are used, the compressors casings may also be run at different speeds.

The train is designed so that a minimum of dismantling is necessary for
maintenance, i.e., when a vertically split casing is used, it is located at the
opposite end of the driver.
