Two principal methods are used to compress gases. The first method is to trap a volume of gas and displace it by the positive action of a piston or rotating member; we call these machines positive-displacement compressors. The second method uses dynamic compression; it is accomplished by the
mechanical action of contoured blades, which impart velocity and hence pressure to the following gas.
