Reciprocating Compressors can be classified as follows based on
I. Cylinder lubrication:

•  Lubricated type & Non-lubricated type
• Dry running piston rings
•  Ringless or labyrinth type.

II. Cylinder cooling:

• Air cooled
• Water cooled

III Cylinder loading

• Single acting
• Double acting

IV Cylinder arrangement,

•  Vertical inline or V-type
•  Horizontal opposed balanced.
